The "Buy a New Computer" assignment forced me to evaluate my personal computer usage and then determine my needs. I had recently purchased a computer prior to taking this class and now wish I had done this assessment before my purchase.
This exercise gave me the knowledge of the various parts of the computer in addition to the choices I can make. First decision was to make a choice between laptop or desktop. My type and location of usage determined my needs. Next step was to compare several brands and what they offer as far as hardware (the operating system, memory, hard drive, keyboard, mouse, modem, etc.) and then on to software, which is applications or instructions for the data entered that makes the hardware work.
In addition to the parts of the computer, I discovered I wanted to understand, at least on a high level, the purpose and function of each component and how it relates to other components. This knowledge equipped me to make an educated decision and provide a base for future decisions.
